New Year's Eve 1938-9 Fire of Manson Warner Block

The burned-out remains of the Manson Warner Block, destroyed in a fire on New Year's Eve 1938-39.
The buildings from left to right are: Gower's Store, operated by Arthur and Florence Gower. Later, the store was operated by J.B. Murdock, then Morris Fyckes operated the store and post-office in the 1940s.
The burned-out Manson Warner block. This building had the Howard Manson Grocery Store and restaurant on the main floor, and the Pentecostal Hall upstairs. After the fire, the building was rebuilt, with two restaurants downstairs and apartments up and down. Manson Warner had a tin-smith shop in the middle unit. A fire started in the George Mickelright Restaurant, with the loss of two children.
The next building, over the years, housed the Standard Bank, Bank of Commerce, Stacey's Restaurant, Ev Bush's Restaurant and taxi stand, and Harrison MacIntosh's Restaurant.
The building on the right, with a tiny bit showing, was the MacGillivary's Hotel, Angie Norman MacDonald Hotel, and then the Percy and Estella Johnston home, store, and Eat Well Inn.

Dr. J.W. Messecar home

This building at 7 Frost Avenue, Long Sault, was the former Dr. J.W. Messecar home and office at Mille Roches, as well as the home of Louise McCartney. Brian McCartney, esteemed teacher and musician, has memories of life in this home, overlooking Bergin Lake, at the west end of Mille Roches beside the Mille Roches United Church. This was the 85th house moved into Long Sault, and it was identified as SL 471. This house was vacant at the time of its move from Mille Roches on October 19, 1956. Ten days later, it was placed on its new foundation on Lot 352. Following its move, this house was used as an office for the Chamber of Commerce, served as a depot for the Bank of Montreal until the Long Sault Shopping Centre was completed, and served as a school for students destined for the new St. George's Separate School on Bethune Avenue. For a period of time, until its conversion to Branch #569, Royal Canadian Legion, this dwelling served as the base for many community activities, including Bill Barker's Square Dance lessons for school children.

"Old Faithful" - The Moccasin

  • "Old Faithful" - The Moccasin - This steam locomotive was the Grand Trunk Railroad/Canadian National Railroad No. 5280, powering the train that ran the St. Lawrence River route west of Montreal, ending its service on August 10, 1958 after more than 100 years of service. It was a passenger train and known for its punctuality, although it was the "milk" train, delivering milk to Montreal, daily, used by students to travel to Cornwall's Cornwall Collegiate Institute/Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and used as the mail train. Many Mohawks of Akwesasne traveled on this train to the reed beds of Rice Lake (Peterborough, Ontario area), with many wearing moccasins. Hence, the name "The Moccasin".
